MISSION OF THE INTERNATIONAL FEDERATIONS

The IFs have the responsibility and duty to manage and to monitor the everyday running of the world's various sports disciplines, including the practical organisation of events during the Games, and the supervision of the development of athletes practising these sports at every level.
Each IF governs its sport at world level and ensures its promotion and development. They monitor the everyday administration of their sports and guarantee the regular organisation of competitions as well as respect for the rules of fair play.

The IFs may, of course, formulate proposals addressed to the IOC concerning the Olympic Charter and the Olympic Movement in general, including the organising and holding of the Olympic Games; give their opinions concerning the candidatures for organising the Olympic Games, particularly concerning the technical capabilities of the candidate cities; collaborate in the preparation of the Olympic Congresses; and participate in the activities of the IOC commissions.

Recognised IFs whose sports appear on the Olympic programme have the status of International Olympic Federations. As such, they participate in annual meetings of the IOC Executive Board with the International Olympic Summer Federations and with their Winter counterparts.

In order to discuss common problems and decide on their events calendars, the summer Olympic federations, the winter Olympic federations and the recognised federations have formed associations: the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF), the Association of International Winter Sports Federations (AIOWF), the Association of IOC Recognised International Sports Federations (ARISF) and the General Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF), which also includes other sports federations.

STRONG DIRECTION FOR SPORT TOURISM DEVELOPMENT

A new attendance record of 228 representatives from Canada's sport and tourism sectors met in Ottawa April 7-9, to attend Sport Events Congress 2005: Building Business through Sport, an annual event organized by the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance (CSTA).

Key outcomes of the Congress include a commitment to the continued development of educational and industry development tools; an increased focus on media relations training for sport and tourism partners; the pursuit of opportunities for greater broadcast exposure of sport events through regulatory reform; and an enhanced hosting role for the tourism industry in assisting Canadian athletes to be able to train and compete on home soil.

CSTA also announced its partnership with the True Sport Secretariat in support of the principles and values associated with True Sport Communities.

"The interest and participation in this year’s congress is a good indicator that we are gaining a better understanding on the benefits associated with sport tourism," said Ursula Thiboutot, president, CSTA. "We must continue to develop an integrated approach among our stakeholders in the sport, tourism, business, government, and media sectors to ensure Canada is well prepared to capitalize on these benefits associated with hosting domestic and international events."

Congress delegates included representatives of national, multi-sport and major games organizations, destination marketing organizations, economic development agencies, federal/provincial ministries of sport and tourism, and suppliers of goods and services to the industry.

Notable conference speakers included Stephen Owen, Minister of Western Economic Diversification and Minister of State (Sport); Rick Brace, president, CTV; Peter Sisam, vice-president, Trans World International; Steve McAllister, sports editor, The Globe and Mail; Mike Chambers, president, Canadian Olympic Committee; Tom Scrimger, director general, Sport Canada; Sue Hylland, president & CEO, Canada Games Council; Dan Thompson, president, MacLaren Momentum; Danny Braun, general manager, World Pond Hockey Championships; and Cyril Leeder, chief operating officer, Ottawa Senators and Corel Centre.

The Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance also announced its Board of Directors for 2005-2006, at the Annual General meeting held in conjunction with the Congress. The 10-member Board is composed of: Gary Curgin (London), Greg Edgelow (Richmond), Glenn Duncan (Edmonton), Janet Gates (Toronto), Lynda Généreux (Sherbrooke), Doug Kryzanowski (Lethbridge), Tracey Mazur (Regina), Peter Montopoli (Ottawa) and Ursula Thiboutot (Ottawa).

The Board of Directors unanimously re-elected Ursula Thiboutot, Director of Marketing and Development at Swimming Canada, and former Chair of the Canadian Tourism Commission's Product Development Committee, to a two-year term as president. Andrée Steel remains on the Board of Directors as past president.
